San Salvador, Bahamas
San Salvador being twelve miles long and five miles wide
is one of the most southernmost islands in the Bahamas
chain located 360 miles southeast of Miami. San Salvador
rises almost vertically 15,000 feet off the ocean floor
with pinnacles at the corners of the island that push
up massive amounts of nutrients which attract bait fish
and pelagic predators such as tuna, wahoo and several
species of billfish. These unspoiled fishing grounds offer
Bahamas fishing reminiscent of the good
old days.
San Salvador is home to many monuments, ruins, and shipwreck
sites that directly reflect its rich history. Miles of
pristine and secluded beaches surround the island as an
emerald-blue sea of such sparkling clarity with visibility
of up to 150 feet. Sparkling lakes cover the interior
of the island and many relics of Loyalist days can be
found.
The pace of life on the island has changed little over
the centuries and today San Salvador is the ultimate escape.
Cockburn Town (pronounced Co-burn) is the main settlement.

Christopher Columbus is known to have made his first landfall on San Salvador Island during his historic voyage to the New World on October 12, 1492. A big stone cross which stands at Long Bay marks the spot where he came ashore. Called Guanahani by the native Lucayan Indians, Columbus renamed the island San Salvador or “Holy Saviour,” noting in his journal: “The beauty of these islands surpasses that of any other and as much as the day surpasses the night in splendour.”Current Weather
